In a short time, various disciplines have a common ground when they study the mediated “reality”. Take social fact as an example. Theoretically, social fact is very difficult to trace as it disappears in time. Yet, we are able to catch “the fact” in the form of representation mediated by “sign” visually, verbally or kinetically. Signifying and communication process, as mentioned by Umberto Eco, is a semiotics concern. Semiotics studies the signifying and communication process which uses sign.

Historically, semiotics is used as an approach to solve practical problems. Yet, it also develops theoretically. Semiotics, as an example, was used by medical practitioners in Greek in the past to identify diseases by looking at symptom as a sign. In cultural field, in the Enlightenment, semiotics was also employed to explain how certain works in various art genres were represented to create certain effects.

Written by leading figures in Cultural Semiotics, the articles explore the possibilities of using Semiotics approach structurally or pragmatically to study cultures. This book is not intended to give a pertinent formula for research activities. It discusses the possibilities of perspective to see cultural expressions. Semiotics perspectives offer a much broader meaning than just the one in anthropological and textual studies (Christomy)

This book is important for scholars and students of Linguistics, Comparative Literature, Anthropology, Archaeology, Art Criticism, Media and Cultural Studies, Philology, and Indonesian Studies.

Book Detail:
Title : Semiotika Budaya (Semiotics of Culture)
Editor(s) : T.
